Analysis on a past students work

Editing

When the clip first starts there is an overlay of a clock on the characters eye, this could of been used to show that for that character there is a short amount of time for him to live or die, meaning his life is on the line and its a matter of time before he is caught or gets away. This could draw the viewer in as it tells them they'll be a lot of close calls as he is being chased and he needs to get away. The director could of put this in to say that when your in a life or death situation there is a certain amount of time before you die, unless you get away, which is displayed in the clip as the character is trying to get away. The clock at the beginning is also sped up, showing a minute as only being several seconds, this could represent that its fast action, and that every second for the character matters and one mistake could ruin his life in a split second.

There is also a lot of match on action in this opening clip, this could be to show that the film we be mostly action based as he is having to escape from the person who is keeping him hostage. This could keep the viewer drawn in as it shows that the film is not slow or boring, but is an fast moving action packed film. The director could of done this to allow the viewer to see that the film will be fast and to keep the viewer focused so they don't miss any key moments in the film.

At the ending of the opening scene, an ellipsis has been used where someone is running after him, this leaves viewers wondering if its the man who's keeping him hostage or his friend. this could of been used to keep the viewer pulled in, so they don't think all the main parts/ action in the film has happened already and there is still more to come so they should still stay focused. The director has used this cliff hanger to show that this is not the end, and to find out what's happened you need to keep watching to see what's going to happen.

Shot types

At the start there is a sequence of extreme close ups, to set the scene. The first close up is of bags being pulled of two characters heads, this makes the viewer wonder what's happened, they've obviously been captured but will leave the viewers wondering why; why have they been captured? what have they done? what's happened? This will therefore keep the audience interested in the film, as to find out they will have to watch on.
The next series of extreme close ups are on a load of shots of blood, showing someone's obviously been injured, and will therefore again leave the viewers wanting to watch on to see why this has happened.
These first extreme close ups have therefore obviously been used to keep the viewers interested in the film and wondering why all of this has happened, and the only way from there on to find out will be to watch the rest, so has basically been used as a kind of eclipse right at the beginning.
also a extreme close up of a character sweating has been used to show this is a tense scene, and to show he's clearly not there out of free will.

The next shot is then a close up on the characters face, which shows him hyper ventilating, showing he is panicking and this is clearly a situation he does not want to be in, also could represent that he is scared as people panic when they are scared etc.

There is then a POV showing shoes pacing in front of him, showing that he is being kept hostage by someone. Once again setting the scene to explain to the audience every fine detail of whats happening.

A close up of one of there hands taping is then shown, to show he has his hands free, so he can get them out of the situation.

A long shot has then been used to show them running off, symbolising they have escaped, and will leave the viewers wondering if they will get away or not as it also shows the other man chasing them.

A close up is then used on one of them looking back at his friend as he has been caught, this shows him focusing and thinking weather he should leave his friend or not, so has been used to express that he has a massive desion to make.

Sound

Over exaggerated diegetic-sound of hand tapping on the wooden surface, this could of been over exaggerated to show that his hands are free, so he could do something to escape. However the tap is in the rhythm of a heart beat so could also represent the heart beat of the character, which would be similar to this rhythm as he will be scared, and will have a high adrenaline level as he is probably thinking to escape so will therefore have a fast loud heart beat, such as the one represented in the footage.
The high pitched noise shows that something is about to happen, because as the clip plays for longer it gets louder. The deep loud music, which is fast paced starts to play after this noises to represent that the movie is now fast paced and action is going to take place, as they are shown running away from the capturer, this could also of been played to represent that something bad is going to happen.

Mise-en-scene

At start they have scruffy clothes on, covered in blood, this could show that they have been in a fight, or have been fighting to escape, or to stop being captured. the fact there clothes are scruffy could represent that the did not go by free will, or tried to fight them off.
The building is in the middle of nowhere and is not clean and looks messy, this could represent it is an deserted building and therefore they will be no walkers by to save them so they will have to make there way out of there on their own without any help.
